Artist Profile: Biviens
We love music, so we knew that when we started this blog, we wanted to interview artists at some point. Being able to dive into the stories behind songs and the artist behind them is so interesting, and we're kicking things off with Biviens. At 21, he recently released his single "Friendzone," and will be dropping his debut album at the end of this month. Check out our interview below, and if you want more of Biviens, catch him at his show in Philadelphia on June 30th at Temple University!
What made you want to pursue music?
I’ve been writing my own music for quite some time. Despite so much going on in the world, I believe my music will touch lives. I’ve been studying music since I was in grade school. It’s a special feeling to create my own.
What influences your sound the most?
Life. The things I go through, the things I see people going through influences me and drives me to create better music. I really like to think outside of the box. From Snarky Puppy, Laura Mvula to The Fugees, Common, and even Travis Scott, I like a mixture of vibes with an organic feel. My mom used to play a ton of '90s R&B while I was a kid so that influenced me quite a bit as well.
You recently released your single "Friendzone." how did it come about?
Last year, I went into a relationship, which started off great, but it ended pretty bad. Things got deep in a short time and being friend zoned in the end really opened my eyes. Honestly, when dealing with something like that you have to rise up no matter what it is and go into another gear. I went into a zone recording five to seven songs a day.
Are there any details about your upcoming album?
I am in the final stages of my first major project I will be releasing at the end of June. I haven’t decided on the title just yet. I’ve been working on giving my listeners something fresh while surprising them as well. I won’t go too much into detail, but this is the best music I’ve ever written. Emotionally, each song has a deeper connection to me. I can’t wait to share it with you. Lots of singing, rapping, and I play horn parts on each song, something I’ve always wanted to do.
Have you had to face any challenges as you try to make a name for yourself?
While I was in college I was studying music and performance. I learned a lot, I’m sort of a book nerd- anybody who knows me knows this. I’ve been making my own music for a while, but I had a lot going on at one time last year. My family needed my help so I took time away from college to work a couple full-time jobs and step up for them when they needed me most. To date, there’s no feeling like taking care of your family. No matter what it is I’ll always go hard for my family.
What's next for you in your career?
It’s been a dream of mine since I was a kid to tour, not just the states, but beyond. Taking my music on the road is the next step. I love performing more than anything. I put a lot into my shows. Never a dull moment.
What do you want people to know about Biviens?
I want people to know that I’m not trying to keep up with anybody. I’m in my own race.
