How to Take Giant Leaps to Achieve Your Dreams

How to take giant leaps to achieve your dreams

Before we get into this, I have to start off with a super cliché statement, so brace yourselves. Ready? You can achieve anything you want with hard work. Ugh, I know! It's said so often, but it’s absolutely true. I like to think of it in four steps: 1) Nurture your passion 2) Put in the work 3) Reap the benefits 4) Keep Going. Now, let’s get into my story, shall we...

Nurture Your Passion

I always knew I wanted to be a writer. Whether it was through reading or getting lost in a great magazine article, my passion was groomed at an early age. As I got older and started exploring the many ways writing influenced my life, I knew magazine journalism was where I was meant to be. All things entertainment, fashion and lifestyle drew my attention. I had dreams of working at the publications that I truly admired and knew that if I worked hard enough, my dream would become a reality. I’m happy to say that I wasn’t wrong!

Put In the Work

I went to college with an understanding that I had to land internships that would get me where I wanted to be and that meant spending at least one semester at a publication in the lovely NYC. In waiting for that perfect opportunity to come to fruition, I committed my time to publications here in Philly. I never once complained because I learned valuable lessons at all of my internships and I truly believed that it was all part of the process. I needed to take these steps before I was ready for the giant one I knew was ahead. After too many applications to count, I got my big break by the fall semester of my senior year! A major magazine decided to make me a part of their intern team.

Reap the Benefits

It was extremely surreal and the experience solidified that making this my career was what I truly wanted. Every day was different and I was constantly surrounded by exciting things (being around celebrities wasn’t a bad perk either haha!). Going forward, I knew it was up to me to keep up the momentum. As a new graduate just a couple of month ago, I made it my mission to make IT happen. I applied for all the opportunities I felt would be valuable to me. Even when it got tough to stay motivated, I reminded myself of what I wanted to achieve. After what felt like a bajillion applications, I finally got an email from a publication I had been dreaming about for years. By completing an extensive edit test and two interviews, I landed one of the magazine’s fellowship positions!

Keep Going

It’s been such a long ride, but this experience really shows that hard work and persevering when things aren’t so easy, will get you where you want to be. I stayed grateful through every experience, every “yes” and every “no” because I knew what was in store for me. Not everyone’s path looks the same and it’s easy to get trapped in comparing yourself to others, but it’s important to remember that you’re on your own journey. One of my favorite quotes is, “You never fail until you keep trying.” My dad introduced me to it when I was around seven years old and I have applied it to my life ever since. Keep working hard for your dreams! It won’t always be easy, but it will be worth it.
